The Nurse Dessie Windrush project offers interactive storytelling workshops that explore the rich legacy of Mary Seacole, a figure whose influence has inspired generations, particularly those from the Windrush community. These workshops have been designed to spotlight the powerful and inspirational stories of the Windrush generation, presenting history in a way that emphasises diversity, inclusivity, and cultural understanding (Details of the lesson plan available upon request). All sessions are free of charge.
The character of *Nurse Dessie*, inspired by Mary Seacole herself, provides a fun and engaging approach to learning, especially suited for young people. Through these interactive sessions, we aim to connect students with the values of compassion, resilience, and inclusivity, while also promoting social skills and early childhood development. By sharing these remarkable stories, we seek to help young people better understand their heritage, and empower them to shape a brighter, more inclusive future.
We would be honoured to invite your school to participate in these storytelling workshops, as we believe it’s crucial to foster a deep understanding of history and culture within the next generation of leaders. This opportunity not only brings to life the history of the Windrush generation but also encourages reflection on the importance of unity and diversity within our communities.
Please see link to the Mary Seacole book.
During our storytelling session, we also go through Nurse Dessie’s suitcase, or the ‘grip’ as its called in the Carribean. See some of the exciting items in the ‘grip’ that we learn about.

Through this support, the project highlights the often overlooked stories of this generation, ensuring their legacy is recognised and shared with future generations.
